Notes from 45th International STC Conference
Anaheim, California, May 17-20, 1998
Cavalcade of Communications Award-Winners:
What They Said About Us at Anaheim
"Bad News for Bullies," Al Kamhi, Andrea Rodriguez, Micki Byrnes,
Shannon Meade, Kym Peoples, Robert Youman
Distinguished Award in International Competition for Technical Video
Judges' Comments: Used
as part of a product rollout campaign, this video uses metaphors of national
safety and security to build support for the aircraft. Superlative job
representing speed and power through creative use of product shots and
computer graphics that at times give the video an almost computer game
quality. The high-speed editing and driving soundtrack are almost dizzying
at times, yet the overall impact underscores the themes of power and speed.
"Bad News for Bullies," Rick Thompson
Distinguished Award for Technical Illustration, Tone
Judges' Comments: This entry is a lithograph of an original acrylic
painting that was prepared for an observation of the Army's Longbow RF
Hellfire missile. The artist's technical challenge was to capture the
details while suggesting the "fire and forget" capability that
allows the Apache's crew to evade danger immediately after launch. The
judges noted the incredible attention to detail and the color palette.
They were impressed with the mix of traditional theme and style with modern
military equipment. Lighting and perspective are key to the painting's power.
"Reflections," Pat Corkery
Excellence Award for Photography
(highest rating given to a photo in this year's international competition)
Judges' Comments: This photo documents a test that determines how
radar energy waves are affected by reflection at different angles through
materials in a fire control radar dome. The sharp angular surfaces on
the walls and ceilings are radar-absorbing materials that soak up the
reflected energy. Judges commented on the composition of this photo, which
works well as is but would also work well for a cover or data sheet with
type integrated into the image.
"Defenders of the Realm," Rick Thompson
Excellence Award for Technical Illustration, Tone
Judges' Comments: This entry is a lithograph of an original acrylic
painting prepared for the British contractor for the UK Apache, as well
as for UK military and government officials. The communication objective
was to forge a link between ancient and modern defenders of the UK. Judges
commented on the excellence of artistic and technical integration. Note
the incredible mechanical detail, as well as the detail in the shadow
of the tree on the boat and the ancient defenders in the mist.
"VISION Newsmagazine," Andrea Lawrence, Steve Otte
Merit Award for Magazines
Judges' Comments: Lavishly produced. Exquisite design and graphics
and snazzy photos. Admirable range of content, including off-the-job topics,
such as home schooling. Poster in September issue weaves together people,
programs, and products. Masthead with photo recognizes all contributors.
Provides community for employees.
"Waves of Peace," Rick Thompson
Merit Award for Technical Illustration, Tone
Judges' Comments: This entry is a photo of an original acrylic
painting that was presented to the government of Greece. The objective
was to achieve an accurate rendering of the aircraft in a scenario that
was rooted in Hellenic culture. This dramatic piece shows good color contrasts
and is beautifully executed.
"The Cat is Back," Al Kamhi, Russ Warren, Kim Sheeter, Ed Pace, Bo
Figliolia, Marvin New, Al LeBoeuf

letterbox format. Excellent editing. Good product shots and effective soundtrack.
